No Success Can Compensate for Failure in the Home

I painted this for an art contest. The writing is Chinese, but the family is Japanese, but who can tell by looking? The Chinese characters read "Renhe Chengogong Dou Bu Neng Mibu Jiating de Shibai" or 'No Success Can Compensate For Failure in the Home." I won grand prize!

Holy cow, Aria. I am going to commission you to paint something for my home someday. Talent, man. That's what you got.

Aria, I bought a numered print of your painting "Success" at the April Conference AMCAP meeting in Salt Lake. I love it and want to give it for a gift to my daughter-in-law's parents, who are Japanese. Can you tell me more about the circumstances under which you painted "Success"?
Thanks,
Cindy

The AMCAP conference? Hmmm, I'm wondering where they got the rights to sell the print... but that's not your problem. Anyway, I'm glad you like it. I painted this piece for the World Family Policy Center's annual conference, where delegates from around the world gathered at BYU to discuss how to protect families. The theme for the conference was "Achieving Development without Losing Our Families." The Japanese family are friends of ours (my husband served a mission in Japan), and the Characters are Chinese because I served my mission in Taiwan and speak Mandarin. They are an adorable family, here going to BYU who now have 4 small children. So the characters could be understood by a Japanese speaker, but the phrase is not Japanese. If you'd like, if you give me your email address I'd be happy to send you a copy of the artist's statement.

This is still one of my favorites of your art work. You are so talented, Aria.

Hello. Recommend you publish the source of the quote - J. E. McCullough. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_O._McKay
